TOMS RIVER – Award-winning historian and writer Erica Armstrong Dunbar will take viewers deep into the life of civil rights icon Harriet Tubman during her keynote discussion of the Ocean County Library’s “Tell Your Tale” virtual series, 2 PM Saturday, July 10.

The Rutgers history professor authored the newly-published She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman. She won the 2018 Frederick Douglass Book Award for Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge.

Professor Dunbar will reveal hidden details of Tubman’s experiences as a liberator of slaves through the Underground Railroad, Union Army expedition leader during the Civil War, women’s suffrage activist, entrepreneur, nurse, philanthropist, wife, and mother.

An in-demand lecturer, Professor Dunbar became National Director of the Association of Black Women Historians in 2019. She was the Inaugural Director of the Program in African American History at the Library Company of Philadelphia from 2011 to 2018.

The series, in conjunction with the Library’s “Tails & Tales” Summer Reading Program, features local and national storytellers and history preservationists who share their experience and expertise.
