Ocean County Library Autism Resources Fair 2023: ‘Developmental Model of Autism Care’

TOMS RIVER – Individuals and families considering autism care will gain valuable insights to inform their decisions during a workshop by therapist Dr. Susan Smith-Foley, OTD, MPA, OTR/L, during the Ocean County Library’s 2023 Autism Resources Fair in the Toms River Branch, 11 AM Saturday, April 15. The Fair will run from 10 AM to 3 PM.

“The Developmental Model of Autism Care for Children, Teens and Families: The What, Where, How, When and Why” will take place in Bishop Hall.

Dr. Smith-Foley will offer an overview of evidence-supported Developmental Relationship-Based Interventions (DRBI) in autism care, including those related to DIR/Floortime. Discussion will touch on differences between DRBI and the behavioral model known as ABA therapy.

Participants will learn how to implement relationships to increase engagement and to improve self-advocacy. Dr. Smith-Foley will share practical developmental strategies for parents and caregivers in everyday life, emphasizing regulation, social emotional development, language, and communication, and play or leisure participation.

The workshop will include ample time for questions and answers.
