Ocean County Library to Mark Juneteenth with “When the Cavalry Came to Call”

May 25, 2023

TOMS RIVER – In honor of Juneteenth, the Ocean County Library will present a live program by noted storyteller Michelle Washington Wilson, “When the Cavalry Came to Call.”

The presentations will take place at the OCL Jackson Branch, 2 PM Saturday, June 17, and at the OCL Waretown Branch, 4 PM Monday, June 19. Ms. Wilson will relate stories and poems that celebrate African American Emancipation and honor the sacrifices made to attain it.

Juneteenth National Independence Day, observed June 19, is a federal holiday that commemorates emancipation and celebrates African American culture.

Ms. Wilson has devoted more than 30 years to writing, performing and story-telling throughout North America and the Caribbean, sharing tales from around the world. She is featured in two books, Legendary Locals of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey and Small Towns, Black Lives. Both can be found in the Ocean County Library system.
