Program on Parenting Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Coming to Toms River Library

February 25, 2019

TOMS RIVER – The Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library will host “Understanding and Supporting Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” in Mancini Hall at 6 p.m. Thursday, Mar. 21.

Dr. Kate Fiske, an Associate Director of Behavioral and Research Services at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center, will summarize the research on the impact of raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on the mental health and relationships of parents. Dr. Fiske will also describe the emotional reactions of parents in response to their child’s early diagnosis and as their child ages.

Strategies for navigating the practical and emotional challenges that arise will be provided, including how to establish coping strategies and build up social support for parents. Parents’ personal anecdotes will be shared to help illustrate their perspective on the joys and challenges of raising a child with ASD.

The program is presented in partnership with Ocean County College.

The branch is located at 101 Washington Street in Toms River.

Registration is required for this free program. To register, call the branch at 732-349-6200 or visit theoceancountylibrary.org/events.
